Sharply struck and fresh
Lot 4527
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.53 g, 5 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri, irregular mint, after 324. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. PROVIDEN-TIAE AVSS / STR Campgate with no doors and two turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 449 (for prototype). Sharply struck and fresh, a beautiful piece. Extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The style of this coin is clearly unofficial, indicating a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. The two last letters in the reverse legend appear to be 'SS', indicating that this is a mule combining an obverse of Constantine I with a reverse of Constantine II.
